Hanoi’s climate shifts dramatically by season, so pack accordingly based on what season you are coming to the capital:
Light, breathable clothing (cotton or quick-dry fabrics)
Rain jacket or poncho – especially from May to September (which is rainy season in Hanoi)
One warm layer – for cooler nights (especially Nov–Feb)
Modest clothes for visiting temples (cover shoulders & knees)
Comfortable walking shoes – Hanoi’s Old Quarters are made for wandering.
Flip-flops – easy for hostel life and quick outings
Pro tip: The Old Quarters get hot and humid—bring clothes you can rewear and wash easily.
Universal adapter (Vietnam uses 220V and type A/C plugs)
Portable charger –so you can charge your phone when visiting temples or pagodas, where charging station is not available.
Cameras – handy taking a picture of the local beautiful sceneries!
Reusable water bottle – refill at your local hostel before heading out.
Travel lock – keep your stuff safe in hostel lockers!
Sunscreen & mosquito repellent – Vietnam is a tropical country, hence bugs and sunlight are plentiful. Stay protected whenever you go out, especially summer!
Quick-dry towel. Ideal for hostel showers or spontaneous swims.
Basic first-aid kit – plasters, meds, etc. Forgot your first-aid kit? Most hostels like Quiri can help you out!
Hand sanitizer & wet wipes – always useful after eating street food!
Passport + visas
Travel insurance
Debit/credit cards + some cash (Vietnam is increasingly become a digital cash country like China, so all you need is a QR code of the seller to send money!)
Google Map ( Old Quarters' streets are a maze!)

Daypack – perfect for day trips to Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay
Notebook or travel journal. Record what you find enjoying in the trip!
Earplugs and eye mask – for dorm life or overnight buses
Noise cancelling headphones: for buses, flights, or when your dorm buddy snores.
Leave bulky clothes and ‘just in case’ gear at home. Hanoi’s weather is mild, and you can buy most essentials in the Old Quarter if needed!
Expensive jewellery or gadgets (High chance of being robbed, better to keep them safe at home)
